Ascot
Ascot Racecourse is a horse racing venue in Berkshire, England, about 25 miles west of London. It was founded in 1711 by Queen Anne on an area of heathland she judged suitable for racing. The first meeting, on 11 August 1711, saw seven horses compete for a prize called Her Majesty's Plate. A permanent grandstand followed in 1793, and the Ascot Authority was created by Act of Parliament in 1913.

Über Ascot
Royal Ascot, the course's marquee meeting, runs over five days each June and draws around 300,000 attendees. The Gold Cup, introduced in 1807, is the meeting's oldest race, while the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, run in July, ranks among Britain's richest races. Queen Elizabeth II's filly Estimate became the first Gold Cup winner owned by a reigning monarch, in 2013.
The course stages flat racing from April to October and National Hunt racing from October to March, across 26 race days a year. Reigning monarchs attend the June meeting, arriving each day in a horse-drawn carriage procession, a tradition begun by King George IV in 1825. Royal Ascot expanded from four to five days in 2002 to mark Queen Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee.
Ascot underwent a £220 million redevelopment between 2004 and 2006, reopening with a modernised 80,000-capacity grandstand. The course now stages 13 Group One flat races and three Grade One jumps races each year, remaining among Britain's principal racing venues.
