Interpol are an American rock band formed in New York City in 1997. The original lineup came together around New York University students Daniel Kessler (guitar), Greg Drudy (drums) and Carlos Dengler (bass, keyboards), joined by vocalist and guitarist Paul Banks; Drudy was later replaced by Sam Fogarino in 2000, and Dengler left the band in 2010.
The band became associated with New York's early-2000s post-punk revival scene. Signed to Matador Records, they released their debut album, Turn on the Bright Lights, in 2002 to significant critical acclaim, and their 2007 album Our Love to Admire became their highest-charting release, reaching number four in the United States and number two in the United Kingdom.
