Ray LaMontagne is an American singer-songwriter born Raymond Charles Jack LaMontagne on June 18, 1973, in Nashua, New Hampshire. Raised largely by his mother among five siblings, he was working in a shoe factory in Lewiston, Maine, when a chance early-morning radio play of Stephen Stills' "Treetop Flyer" prompted him to quit his job around 1999 and pursue music.

Über Ray LaMontagne

His 2004 debut album, Trouble, produced by Ethan Johns, sold more than 500,000 copies worldwide and established his raspy, soul-inflected take on folk and rock. Subsequent releases including Till the Sun Turns Black (2006), Gossip in the Grain (2008), and Supernova (2014, produced by Dan Auerbach) built on that sound, and his 2010 album God Willin' & the Creek Don't Rise won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album.

Known for guarding his privacy and rarely giving interviews, LaMontagne has drawn critical comparisons to Otis Redding, Van Morrison, and Nick Drake. He has continued to record and tour in the years since, releasing Long Way Home in 2024, and lives on a farm in Massachusetts.
