Vinicio Capossela was born on 14 December 1965 in Hannover, Germany, to parents from Irpinia in Campania, and grew up in the province of Reggio Emilia. He is an Italian singer-songwriter and writer. Francesco Guccini brought him to the Club Tenco, and his debut album All'una e trentacinque circa (1990) won the Targa Tenco for best debut in 1991.

His breakthrough album was Il ballo di San Vito (1996), followed by records including Canzoni a manovella (2000), Ovunque proteggi (2006), Marinai, profeti e balene (2011), Canzoni della cupa (2016) and Ballate per uomini e bestie (2019). His lyrics draw on Italian folk traditions, especially those of Irpinia, and on literature such as Homer and Melville. His style has been compared to Tom Waits.

He has won several Targhe Tenco, including best album awards, and received the Premio Tenco for his career in 2017. He has also published books such as Non si muore tutte le mattine (2004) and Eclissica (2021), and acted in films. Since 2013 he has been artistic director of the Sponz Fest in Calitri.
