Christmas and New Year in Belgium 2026

Geprüft von Wanderistan editorial team · Zuletzt aktualisiert: 06.08.2026

Belgium does a long festive season. It opens earlier than most of Europe because the country keeps two separate winter gift traditions, and it runs on into January rather than stopping abruptly the day after Christmas. For a visitor that means roughly six weeks in which almost every city centre has something on.

Quick answer

It is also the busiest stretch of the Belgian events year. The theatre and concert calendar peaks in December — ballet, seasonal concerts, family spectacle and end-of-year comedy runs all land at once — layered on top of the markets and lights in the squares outside.

This guide explains how the season is structured, what is different about the Flemish and Walloon halves of it, and what to plan around. Everything currently listed for the season is pulled in below and updates on its own.

How the Belgian festive season is structured

Christmas24–25 DecemberChristmas Eve dinner is the main event; shops close on the 25th, but 26 December is a normal working day in Belgium
New Year31 December – early JanuaryNew Year’s Eve parties and concerts, then a run of new-year gala and ballet performances into the first week of January

Two gift days, not one

The thing that surprises visitors most is that Belgium separates the gift-giving from Christmas. Sinterklaas — Saint-Nicolas in French — comes on 6 December, and for Belgian children that is the day presents arrive. It is a domestic, family-centred occasion rather than a public festival, so there is no single event to attend, but you will see it everywhere in the run-up: the shops, the sweets, and a whole strand of children’s theatre and arena shows built around the character.

That tradition is much more prominent in Dutch-speaking Flanders, where the seasonal family programme in the big theatres is dominated by it through late November and early December. In Wallonia, Saint-Nicolas is marked too but the December calendar leans more toward French-language theatre, chanson and comedy.

Christmas itself is then a quieter, food-centred family occasion. Christmas Eve dinner on the 24th is the main meal, and the 25th is largely closed — restaurants that do open book out well ahead. The 26th, unlike in Britain or the Netherlands, is an ordinary day here.

Christmas markets

Every significant Belgian city puts a market and lights into its central square from late November to early January, and in the bigger cities the market is a route through several squares rather than a single site. Opening and closing dates are set city by city and published by the local organiser each autumn, so check the specific city rather than assuming a national season.

Practically: markets are at their best on a weekday evening. December weekends in the central squares are genuinely crowded, and the historic centres they sit in were not built for it. Cold-weather kit matters more than you would expect — Belgian December is damp rather than dramatically cold, and standing still in it is what gets you.

What to plan around

  • December is the peak month of the Belgian stage calendar. Ballet, seasonal concerts and family spectacle sell out earlier than the rest of the year — book before you travel, not once you arrive.
  • The new-year performance run continues into the first week of January, so early January is a quieter, cheaper time to catch the same kind of programme.
  • Shops and most restaurants close on 25 December and many on 1 January. Public transport runs a reduced holiday timetable on both.
  • 26 December is not a public holiday in Belgium — shops, transport and services run as normal. If you are used to a two-day Christmas shutdown, this is the day to use.
  • Sinterklaas on 6 December is a family day at home rather than a public event — do not plan a trip around attending it.
  • Language still applies to the seasonal programme: Sint shows and end-of-year comedy runs in Flanders are in Dutch, their Walloon equivalents in French. Ballet, circus and concerts are the safe cross-language bookings.
  • The country is small enough to combine two or three city centres in a weekend by train, which is the best way to do the market season.

FAQ

When is the Christmas season in Belgium?
Roughly late November to early January. The Sinterklaas build-up starts in mid-November, the markets and lights run from late November, and the performance calendar continues into the first week of January.
What is Sinterklaas and when is it?
Sinterklaas — Saint-Nicolas in French — falls on 6 December and is the main children’s gift day in Belgium, separate from Christmas. It is a family occasion at home rather than a public event, though the weeks before it fill the theatres with children’s shows, especially in Flanders.
Is anything open on Christmas Day in Belgium?
Very little on 25 December — shops close, public transport runs a holiday timetable, and restaurants that do open are booked well in advance. Christmas Eve dinner on the 24th is the bigger occasion locally. 26 December is not a public holiday in Belgium, so shops reopen as normal.
What is on in Belgium at Christmas besides markets?
December is the busiest month of the Belgian stage year — ballet, seasonal and classical concerts, winter circus, family shows and end-of-year comedy runs across theatres in Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent, Hasselt and the Walloon cities. The listings below show what is currently scheduled.
Where should I go for Christmas in Belgium?
Brussels has the largest market route and the deepest performance calendar, but Ghent, Antwerp, Bruges, Liège and Mons all run their own centres and are close enough by train to combine two or three in a weekend.
