Stuttgart

Stuttgart is Germany's car capital — Gottlieb Daimler built his first motorised vehicle here, and the Mercedes-Benz and Porsche museums are genuine world-class draws — but it is also surprisingly green, sitting in a bowl of hills with vineyards visible from the city centre. It feels more industrious than picture-postcard, a working city of engineers and Swabian wine bars rather than a tourist set-piece.
