This concert at the Théâtre du Châtelet puts the spotlight on Johannes Brahms, featuring his Symphony No. 3 and Hungarian Dances. The third movement of the symphony gained fame through its use in the film *Aimez-vous Brahms ?*, set in 1960s Paris with Ingrid Bergman, Anthony Perkins, and Yves Montand. The Hungarian Dances, published in the late 1860s, were arranged by Brahms from themes collected from Hungarian violinist Ede Reményi.
The programme also includes excerpts from Antonín Dvořák's Slavonic Dances, Op. 46 and 72. Dvořák owed his international recognition to Brahms, who introduced him to publisher Simrock. The Orchestre de chambre de Paris performs, with a description evoking the fiery, languorous, and syncopated rhythms of the Hungarian dances, complete with cimbalom effects.
