Sheffield

Sheffield trades on being the self-styled Outdoor City — a former steel town wedged against the Peak District, with more trees per person than almost anywhere else in Europe and hills that give it a green, gritty character unlike its flatter northern rivals. It's a working city more than a polished tourist one: Kelham Island's converted steelworks and the Moor Market carry a regenerated, unpretentious feel rather than a manicured heritage-trail vibe.
