Why Croatia?

Croatia offers a coastline that rivals the Greek islands or the French Riviera, with a shorter flight from Spain and a currency that, outside peak season, stretches further. More than a thousand islands dot the Adriatic between Split and Dubrovnik, with clear-water coves, stone-built towns and a maritime culture that shapes much of the country's tourism.

The appeal goes beyond beaches: Split is built around Diocletian's Palace, still inhabited and in daily use two thousand years on, and Dubrovnik is one of Europe's best-preserved walled cities, now also known for its role as a Game of Thrones filming location. Chartering a boat, even for a single day, or island-hopping by ferry is the normal way to see the Dalmatian coast, not a side activity.

The main caveat for travellers from Spain is seasonality: most direct connections to Split, Dubrovnik or Zadar run only from May to October, concentrated in July and August. Outside those months, reaching Croatia usually means connecting through Munich, Frankfurt, Vienna or Rome, except for Zagreb, which keeps better year-round connectivity as the capital.

Where to stay

  • Split The gateway to the central Dalmatian islands (Hvar, Brač, Vis), and a city that lives inside the ruins of Diocletian's Palace.
  • Dubrovnik The Adriatic's most photographed walled old town, with prices noticeably higher than the rest of the country in summer.
  • Zadar A calmer, cheaper alternative to Split or Dubrovnik, known for the Sea Organ and its seafront sunsets.
  • Zagreb An inland capital with a Central European café-and-market atmosphere, useful for pairing a city break with the coast.
  • Rijeka A former industrial port turned emerging cultural hub, and a base for the Opatija Riviera and Kvarner Gulf.

Croatia is still cheaper than Italy or France, but it isn't a budget destination in peak season: a simple coastal meal runs €12-18, inter-island ferries €5-15 per crossing, and accommodation in Dubrovnik or Hvar in July-August can cost double that of Split or Zadar. Outside peak season (May-June, September-October) prices drop noticeably and the old towns are far less crowded.
