Ancient ruins sit unfenced in the middle of everyday traffic, and that collision of the classical and the ordinary is what makes Rome unlike anywhere else. The historic centre is dense enough to walk between the Colosseum, the Pantheon and the Vatican in a single day, but it's also chaotic, loud and heaving with tour groups at every major site. The food, unsurprisingly, is as good as its reputation.

Ideal fürancient history and outstanding food packed into one walkable centre

FortbewegungThe historic centre is best covered on foot — much of it is pedestrianised or narrow enough that walking beats transit. The metro has three lines (A, B/B1 and C) but limited coverage of the centre itself, since construction keeps hitting archaeological finds; buses and trams fill the gaps but run slower than the map suggests.
Wo übernachtenTrastevere — cobbled, atmospheric, dense with trattorias and the best evening buzz; Monti — trendy and central, an easy walk to the Colosseum; Prati — calmer and more residential, close to the Vatican and well connected by metro
Eher nicht, wennanyone wanting calm or short queues — major sights are crowded year-round, and pickpocketing is a real risk on public transport and around tourist hotspots
