This screening brings the 1993 animated feature Batman: Mask of the Phantasm to Sacramento. The film, the first theatrical release in the DC Animated Universe, stars Kevin Conroy as Batman and Mark Hamill as the Joker. It follows Batman as he confronts a mysterious vigilante called the Phantasm, who is murdering Gotham City's crime bosses, while Bruce Wayne reconnects with a former lover, Andrea Beaumont.
Directed by Eric Radomski and Bruce Timm, the film is based on Batman: The Animated Series. The voice cast also includes Dana Delany as Andrea Beaumont, Stacy Keach as the Phantasm, and Efrem Zimbalist Jr. as Alfred. Originally planned for direct-to-video, the film was released in theaters on short notice. It remains notable as the only animated Batman feature to receive a theatrical release for over two decades, and it became financially successful after its home-media release.
