Events in Switzerland 2026: Calendar & How to Plan the Trip

Switzerland is small enough that you can build a trip around an event almost anywhere in the country and still sleep in the same city each night. Zürich to Bern is under an hour by train, Zürich to Geneva under three, and nearly everything in this calendar is on a direct or single-change service from one of the two.

Quick answer

What is still ahead in 2026: the Zurich Film Festival from 24 September to 4 October, the Geneva International Film Festival from 30 October to 8 November, Christmas markets from 19 November, and Geneva’s Escalade — the road race on 5–6 December and the Fête itself on 11–13 December. Around them runs a continuous programme of concerts, comedy and theatre, heavily weighted to Zürich and Geneva.

The full calendar of upcoming events is below as a date-and-city table. The rest of this page is the planning half: which region does what and when, how to get around, and what to know before you book.

Four regions, four calendars

Switzerland’s language regions run on different rhythms, and the Alpine resort belt runs on a fourth — treating the country as one calendar is the usual planning mistake. (Romansh, the fourth national language, is spoken in parts of Graubünden, but it does not drive a separate events calendar.)

RegionMain citiesKnown for
German-speaking (north, centre, east)Zürich, Basel, Bern, Lucerne, Schaffhausen, St. GallenCarnival in late winter, summer open-airs, the densest concert circuit, Christmas markets
French-speaking (Romandie, west)Geneva, Lausanne, Fribourg, Yverdon-les-Bains, SierreLakeside summer festivals, francophone comedy and theatre, Geneva’s Escalade in December
Italian-speaking (Ticino, south)Lugano, LocarnoAn August-weighted calendar led by the Locarno film festival
Alpine (Valais, Graubünden)Verbier, Sierre, Alpine resort townsClassical festivals in high summer, vineyard walks in autumn, ski season from December

The year, season by season

  • Late winter (February–March): Basel Fasnacht, the biggest carnival in Switzerland, beginning the Monday after Ash Wednesday. Ski season still running.
  • Spring (April–May): Zürich’s Sechseläuten guild festival in April; the concert and theatre season continues indoors.
  • Summer (June–August): peak open-air season — Montreux Jazz and Paléo on Lake Geneva in July, Verbier and Lucerne for classical, Locarno for film in August, Street Parade in Zürich (8 August 2026), and cantonal Schwingfeste on sawdust rings around the country.
  • Autumn (September–November): the film festivals take over — Zürich 24 September to 4 October, Geneva 30 October to 8 November — alongside Valais vineyard walks such as the Marche des Cépages above Sierre on 12 September, and lakeside festivals at Yverdon-les-Bains and Sempach.
  • Winter (mid-November–December): Christmas markets from 19 November in Zürich, Geneva’s Escalade on 11–13 December, and the ski season opening in the Alps.

Getting around — the part that decides the itinerary

Swiss public transport is the reason a multi-city event trip works here and does not elsewhere. Intercity trains run at least hourly on the main routes, seat reservations are not normally needed on domestic services, and the timetable is built so connections meet rather than miss.

  • The Swiss Travel Pass covers unlimited travel on trains, buses and lake boats for a set run of consecutive days, plus entry to a large number of museums. Best value if you are moving every day or two.
  • The Half Fare Card halves the price of every ticket for a year instead. Better if you are based in one city and taking occasional trips out.
  • Zurich Airport (ZRH) and Geneva Airport (GVA) both have rail stations under the terminal with direct trains to the city centre in around ten and six minutes respectively. EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg (BSL) serves the north-west.
  • Zürich HB is the country’s main interchange. From it, Basel, Bern and Lucerne are all short direct rides, which makes a single Zürich base viable for most of the German-speaking calendar.
  • The Léman Express regional network extends Geneva’s reach across the Swiss and French communes around the lake, widening what counts as a day trip from the west.

Before you book

  • Switzerland uses the Swiss franc (CHF) and is not in the EU, though it is in the Schengen area — so no border check on arrival from most of Europe, but a separate currency.
  • Accommodation is the largest line in a Swiss trip budget, and festival and market weekends in Zürich, Geneva and Basel go early. Book those before the flights.
  • Sunday closing is real outside stations and airports. Plan shopping and supplies around it.
  • Programmes for the big festivals are published well ahead of the edition; the smaller town festivals confirm much later. Confirm on the organiser’s own page before committing travel.
  • Language shifts with the region — German in Zürich, Basel and Bern, French in Geneva and Lausanne, Italian in Ticino. It matters most for comedy and theatre, which are usually performed in the local language only.

FAQ

What events are on in Switzerland in 2026?
Still ahead in 2026: the Zurich Film Festival (24 September – 4 October), the Geneva International Film Festival (30 October – 8 November), Christmas markets from 19 November, and Geneva’s Escalade — the Course de l’Escalade on 5–6 December and the Fête de l’Escalade on 11–13 December. The full calendar of everything we track is in the table above.
When is the best time to visit Switzerland for events?
July and August for open-air music and Alpine festivals, late September to early November for the two film festivals, and mid-November to December for Christmas markets and the Escalade. February and March bring Basel Fasnacht.
Which Swiss city has the most events?
Zürich, by a large margin — it carries the majority of the country’s listed events across music, comedy and theatre. Geneva is second, running a largely separate French-language programme built more on theatre and comedy than on concerts.
Is a Swiss Travel Pass worth it?
It depends on the shape of the trip. The Swiss Travel Pass covers unlimited train, bus and boat travel for a set run of days and suits an itinerary that moves constantly. If you are based in one city with occasional trips out, the Half Fare Card — half price on every ticket for a year — usually works out better.
How far apart are Swiss cities?
Not far. Zürich to Bern or Lucerne is around an hour by direct train, Zürich to Basel about the same, and Zürich to Geneva under three hours. A single base plus day trips covers most of the calendar.
