Poetry Slam 43 brings the competitive art of spoken word to Wiesbaden. In a poetry slam, poets perform original work before a live audience and a panel of judges, who score each performance on both content and delivery. The audience is encouraged to react vocally—clapping, snapping, stomping—to influence the judges' scores.

This event follows the classic slam format: typically, five judges are selected from the audience, and the highest and lowest scores are dropped. Poets may compete as individuals or in teams, with multiple elimination rounds leading to a final winner. Props, costumes, and music are generally forbidden, though brief singing is allowed.

Rooted in the Chicago poetry scene of the 1980s, poetry slams were created to move poetry from academia to a popular audience. Today, slams are held worldwide, offering an energetic, interactive experience where the crowd's energy directly shapes the competition.
