Barcelona’s Carnival returns for 2026 with a week-long celebration that runs from Dijous Gras to Dimecres de Cendra. Rooted in ancient Roman festivals and medieval Christian tradition, the city’s carnival is a participatory, transgressive affair where masks and costumes let everyone step out of everyday life. The festivities kick off with the arrival of King Carnestoltes, whose presence opens the first dances and masked balls.

Throughout the week, neighbourhoods take centre stage with their own rues, imaginative and creative parades that usually happen on Saturday afternoon. The grand finale comes on Ash Wednesday with the satirical funeral procession of the sardine, closing the carnival until next year. For visitors, it’s a chance to experience Barcelona’s living popular culture, from the historic giants of the Casa de la Caritat to the spontaneous street celebrations that fill the city with colour and chaos.
