Things to Do in Chicago 2026: Concerts, Cubs & the Lakefront in the United States

Chicago is one of the easiest big American cities to see on foot. The museums, the lakefront, the architecture and a genuinely deep music calendar all sit within a compact downtown and the neighbourhoods immediately around it, and the elevated train reaches nearly all of them without a car.

Quick answer

It is also the city where the season matters most. Between roughly June and September the lakefront, the outdoor venues and the beaches carry the trip; between December and March the wind comes off Lake Michigan and everything moves indoors, into the theatres, blues clubs and museums that are the reason a winter visit still works.

Below: the venues, the sport, what to do in daylight, and how to move around. Upcoming events are listed further down and update themselves as new dates are announced.

Where to see live music in Chicago

Chicago's venue stock is unusually old and unusually good — 1890s halls, 1920s ballrooms and picture palaces, and a converted salt shed on the river — and it spreads across the neighbourhoods rather than concentrating downtown.

VenueAreaWhat it is
The Chicago TheatreLoopThe 1921 State Street landmark under the famous marquee; seated, mixed programming
The Salt ShedNorth BranchConverted Morton Salt plant — an indoor hall plus an outdoor Fairgrounds in summer
Thalia HallPilsenAn 1892 hall turned into one of the best mid-size rooms in the city
MetroWrigleyvilleThe rock club, open since 1982, a block from Wrigley Field
Empty BottleUkrainian VillageSmall, cheap and reliably interesting; the indie end of town
Aragon BallroomUptownA 1926 Spanish-style ballroom, all atmosphere and no seats

Sport in Chicago

Wrigley Field is the reason to be here in summer. It opened in 1914, still has ivy growing on the outfield walls, and sits inside a residential neighbourhood rather than a parking lot — the Cubs play most days through the season and the bars around the park are part of the day. The White Sox play on the South Side at Rate Field, an easier ticket and a shorter queue.

The United Center on the West Side carries the winter, with the Blackhawks in the NHL and the Bulls in the NBA sharing the building. Soldier Field on the lakefront hosts the Chicago Bears through the NFL season and Chicago Fire FC in MLS — and is the one venue on this list where the walk back to a train is worth planning in advance.

What to do in daylight

  • Millennium Park — free, and the Cloud Gate sculpture, Pritzker Pavilion and Lurie Garden are all inside it. The park programmes free outdoor events through the summer.
  • The Art Institute of Chicago — on Michigan Avenue at the edge of Millennium Park, and one of the great encyclopaedic museums.
  • Museum Campus — the Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium and Adler Planetarium share a lakefront headland, walkable from the Loop.
  • An architecture river cruise — the single best way to understand the city, and it runs from the Riverwalk downtown from spring to autumn.
  • Skydeck Chicago at Willis Tower and 360 CHICAGO — high-rise views from opposite ends of downtown.
  • The Lakefront Trail — 18 miles of path along Lake Michigan, with the beaches and Lincoln Park Zoo (free) on the north stretch.

Getting around

The CTA "L" is the backbone and reaches nearly everything a visitor wants: the Blue Line runs to O'Hare (ORD), the Orange Line to Midway (MDW), and the Red Line links downtown to Wrigleyville and the north-side venues. A multi-day transit pass is almost always cheaper than paying per ride.

Downtown itself is a grid and easy to walk. Where a car helps is the far West Side and the outdoor venues on the North Branch; where it does not help at all is anywhere near Wrigley Field on a game day, when parking is scarce and expensive and the Red Line is the obvious answer.

FAQ

What is there to do in Chicago in 2026?
Concerts at the Chicago Theatre, Thalia Hall, the Salt Shed, Metro and the Aragon Ballroom year-round, plus the outdoor lakefront venues in summer. Cubs baseball at Wrigley Field and White Sox at Rate Field through the season, Blackhawks hockey at the United Center in winter, and Bears football at Soldier Field in autumn. In daylight: Millennium Park, the Art Institute, Museum Campus and an architecture river cruise.
When is the best time to visit Chicago?
June to September, when the lakefront, the beaches, the outdoor venues and baseball at Wrigley Field are all running. Winters are long and cold, but the city works indoors — theatres, blues clubs, museums and hockey at the United Center.
Do you need a car in Chicago?
No. The CTA "L" reaches both airports, the Loop, Wrigleyville and most of the venues in this guide, and downtown is walkable. A car is a liability near Wrigley Field on a game day.
What is free to do in Chicago?
Millennium Park and the Cloud Gate sculpture, Lincoln Park Zoo, the Lakefront Trail, the Riverwalk and the Navy Pier grounds all cost nothing to enter, which keeps a multi-day trip affordable even after adding two or three paid museums.
