He worked in a range of retail jobs, was a Liberal Democrat member of Bristol City Council from 1996 to 2003, and performed leading roles with amateur opera companies between 1999 and 2003.
In 2007 he won the first series of Britain's Got Talent after auditioning with "Nessun dorma" from Puccini's Turandot. His debut album "One Chance", released in July 2007, reached number one in the UK and was certified platinum there.
Later albums include "Passione" (2009), "Cinema Paradiso" (2010), "Home" (2014), "On Stage" (2017) and "Winter Dreams" (2018). The 2013 film "One Chance", starring James Corden, was based on his life, and he appeared on America's Got Talent: The Champions in 2019.
