Germany has far more Christmas markets than the famous big-city ones. This guide collects the 2026 dates of 26 markets in storybook towns, wine villages and historic cities, each read from the organiser's, the city's or the local tourist office's own German-language page in early October 2026.

Planning around openings, closures and weekends

Totensonntag (Sunday 22 November 2026) is a day of remembrance and several markets close for it: Rothenburg, Bernkastel-Kues and Trier all list 22 November as closed.

Two of the villages are weekend markets rather than daily ones: Monschau (four weekends from 27 November) and Quedlinburg's Advent in den Höfen (three weekends from 28 November). Michelstadt is open Wednesday to Sunday.

The earliest openings here are Rüdesheim and Freiburg on 19 November. Goslar and the main Lübeck market run until 30 December, the longest of the markets listed; Görlitz is the shortest, 4 to 20 December.
