Why Germany?

Germany is home to the largest Greek diaspora in Western Europe, with more than 450,000 residents of Greek descent according to German federal statistics. The largest concentrations are in Frankfurt, Munich and Stuttgart, while a newer wave that arrived after 2009 settled mostly in Berlin, drawn by universities and startups. As a result, a large share of Greece-Germany travel consists of family visits or work trips rather than pure tourism.

The route is served by a dense network of direct flights: Athens connects daily to Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin and Düsseldorf via Aegean, Lufthansa, Eurowings and other carriers, with flight times of roughly 2.5 to 3.5 hours. Thessaloniki and Heraklion also have seasonal or regular connections, mainly to Frankfurt and Munich.

Beyond family visits, Germany offers city breaks with distinct character: Berlin for art and nightlife, Munich as a gateway to the Alps, Stuttgart for the automotive industry. December stands out for its Christmas markets, with Dresden's Striezelmarkt — running since 1434 — the oldest in the country.

Where to stay

  • Berlin The capital's international art and nightlife scene, where much of the post-2009 wave of Greek emigration settled.
  • Frankfurt am Main Germany's financial hub and the main gateway from Athens, with a steady Greek presence in banking and business.
  • Stuttgart Home to the automotive industry (Mercedes-Benz, Porsche) and one of the German cities with the largest Greek population.
  • Hamburg A port city with a long shipping tradition, known for the Speicherstadt warehouse district and links to the maritime industry.
  • Dresden A baroque city on the Elbe, known for the rebuilt Frauenkirche and the Striezelmarkt, Germany's oldest Christmas market.

A one-way Athens-Germany flight (economy, no checked bag) typically costs €80-200 depending on season and carrier, while a mid-range double room runs €90-140 a night in Berlin or Frankfurt and somewhat less in Dresden. Daily food and local transport costs average around €35-55 per person.
