Why Spain?
Spain is the only major Mediterranean country France borders both by road and by rail: the A9 motorway crosses at Le Perthus in half a day from Paris, and the high-speed line links Paris to Barcelona in just over 6.5 hours via Perpignan and Figueres, no airport required.
That land continuity changes how the trip gets planned. A weekend in Barcelona can be booked like a trip to Lyon, a road trip into Andalusia crosses the Pyrenees, the Meseta and olive groves within a single day's drive, and flights from Paris, Lyon, Nice, Toulouse or Marseille put the other major Spanish cities within roughly two hours.
The country packs distinct profiles into short distances — Mediterranean coast, an inland capital, and a warmer Andalusia in winter — making it easy to build a varied itinerary without stacking domestic flights.
Where to stay
- Barcelona — The Spanish city closest to France, linked to Paris, Lyon and Marseille by direct train with no airport involved.
- Madrid — The capital holds the country's major museums (Prado, Reina Sofía, Thyssen) and is a direct flight of just over two hours from Paris or Toulouse.
- Malaga — Gateway to the Costa del Sol, with winters notably milder than the French coast, popular for longer off-season stays.
- Seville — Capital of Andalusia, reachable by direct flight or by combining a TGV to Madrid with a Spanish high-speed train onward, with summers hot enough to avoid in July and August.
- Zaragoza — A midpoint stop on the Barcelona-Madrid axis, under two hours by road or rail from the border, and far less visited by French travellers than the two large cities around it.
A decent dinner in a mid-sized Spanish city typically runs 15-25 € per person, and a double room in a mid-range hotel usually falls between 70 and 110 € depending on city and season — close to or slightly below comparable French cities. Prices rise sharply in Barcelona and Madrid during July-August and around major events (Feria, San Fermín, Fallas).
