York is a walled medieval city where you can circuit the UK's most complete city walls in about an hour and drop down into the Shambles' crooked timber-framed lanes or under the twin towers of York Minster along the way. It's compact, atmospheric, and unusually easy to see on foot, with the Yorvik Viking Centre and National Railway Museum adding real depth beyond the obvious postcard shots.
