Zagreb Christmas Market 2026: Confirmed Dates (Advent u Zagrebu)

Revisado por Wanderistan editorial team · Última actualización: 27 jul 2026

Advent u Zagrebu (Advent in Zagreb) is not one market but a city-wide winter festival spread across more than 25 locations — from Ban Jelačić Square and the Upper Town to park pavilions and even a WWII-era tunnel turned illuminated walkway. It was voted Best Christmas Market in Europe by European Best Destinations in 2016, 2017 and 2018, and remains one of the continent's most-praised.

What makes Zagreb's Advent distinctive

  • It is a festival, not a market: dozens of separate zones — Ban Jelačić Square, Zrinjevac Park, King Tomislav Square, the Upper Town and more — each with different food, music and lighting themes.
  • Grič Tunnel: a WWII-era air-raid tunnel beneath the Upper Town is transformed into a lit, art-installation walkway each season, one of the most distinctive single locations of any European Christmas market.
  • Awards pedigree: repeated "Best Christmas Market in Europe" wins built Zagreb's reputation as the market to beat, and it remains a benchmark other cities are compared against.
  • Ice skating and live music run nightly at Ban Jelačić Square and King Tomislav Square, the two biggest hubs.

Planning your visit

Zagreb Airport (Franjo Tuđman) connects to the centre by shuttle bus in about 30 minutes. Because Advent spans the whole city rather than one square, plan at least two evenings to see the main hubs — Ban Jelačić Square, Zrinjevac and the Upper Town — without rushing.

The long run (into the first week of January) means Zagreb is one of the better options in this guide for a New Year city break, with the festival still in full swing.
