Why Malta?

Malta, a small archipelago at the centre of the Mediterranean, has a long-standing connection to France through the Order of the Knights of St John, several of whose grand masters were French and whose forts and palaces still shape the streets of Valletta.

As a member of the European Union and the eurozone, the islands make things simple for French travellers: no currency exchange, minimal entry formalities, and distances short enough that the main island can be crossed end to end in under an hour by car.

English, an official language alongside Maltese, makes everyday communication easy, and a large concentration of language schools draws French students every year who come to practise their English while enjoying the Mediterranean climate and the sea close at hand.

Where to stay

  • Valletta The fortified capital built by the Knights of St John, Valletta packs baroque palaces and St John's Co-Cathedral into a UNESCO-listed grid of streets.
  • Sliema Facing Valletta across the harbour and linked by ferry, Sliema offers a long seafront promenade, shops and cafés with a direct view of the capital's ramparts.
  • Victoria (Gozo) The main town on Gozo, Malta's quieter sister island reached by ferry, Victoria is dominated by its fortified Citadel overlooking the surrounding hills and villages.
  • Marsaxlokk A fishing village on the south-east coast, Marsaxlokk fills its harbour with brightly painted luzzu boats and hosts a well-known Sunday fish market.
  • Birkirkara Malta's most populous town, Birkirkara is mainly residential and commercial, off the tourist trail but well connected since most bus routes pass through it.

A decent double room runs 70–130 € a night outside peak season, more in July-August; a meal at a local restaurant costs around 15–25 € per person; buses, the backbone of public transport, are covered by a day or week Tallinja card for a few euros, and car rental averages 25–35 € a day.
