Why Malta?
Direct flights from Warsaw, Krakow, Katowice, Gdansk, Wroclaw and Poznan reach Malta in roughly three hours, making the island reachable even for an extended weekend without connections or an overnight layover.
Malta is an EU and eurozone member, and English holds official-language status alongside Maltese - no currency exchange beyond what's already familiar from the rest of Europe, and no language barrier for car rental, medical visits or everyday errands.
The whole archipelago covers under 316 km², so a UNESCO-listed capital, megalithic temples older than the pyramids and a dozen-plus swimming coves all fit into a single multi-day trip without long transfers between them.
Where to stay
- Valletta — The UNESCO-listed capital, built by the Knights of Malta in the 16th century, with narrow streets, fortified bastions and St John's Co-Cathedral housing a Caravaggio.
- Sliema — A modern waterfront promenade lined with restaurants and shopping centres, and the main departure point for ferries to Gozo and Comino.
- Victoria (Gozo) — Gozo's main town, dominated by the hilltop Citadel, with a noticeably slower pace than the main island.
- Marsaxlokk — A colourful fishing village with luzzu boats in the harbour and a Sunday fish market, a popular half-day trip.
- Birkirkara — Malta's most populous town, more residential and local than the coastal resorts, with cheaper accommodation than the seafront areas.
Malta isn't cheap by Mediterranean standards: a mid-range restaurant meal typically runs 15-25 EUR per person, a 3-4 star hotel in season costs 80-150 EUR per night, and local buses charge a flat fare of around 2 EUR regardless of distance. A return Gozo ferry ticket costs about 4.65 EUR per person (cars pay separately).
