Chang / Sun Duo: Chamber Variations

Elizabeth Chang and Jiayan Sun, an established violin-and-piano duo, anchor this chamber program devoted to the possibilities of variation. Beethoven's Sonata No. 8 and Schubert's Fantasie in C major, D. 934, sit at opposite emotional poles — one lean, one expansive — yet both reveal a shared obsession with tightly structured forms and with exhausting the potential of a single musical idea.

The contemporary thread comes from Salvatore Macchia's Fantasy Variations, written for and premiered by Chang and Sun, carrying that same inventive spirit into the present day.
