American Football is an American rock band formed in 1997 in Urbana, Illinois, centered on singer-guitarist-bassist Mike Kinsella alongside guitarist and keyboardist Steve Holmes and drummer Steve Lamos, who also plays trumpet and percussion. The group split up in 2000 but reunited in 2014 after a deluxe reissue of their debut album drew renewed attention, with Kinsella's cousin Nate Kinsella later joining on bass and vibraphone.

À propos de American Football

The band's self-titled 1999 debut, recorded while its members were still college students, became one of the most influential records in the midwest emo and math rock scenes, prized for its unusual time signatures, open guitar tunings and jazz-inflected arrangements. Two further self-titled albums followed the reunion, released in 2016 and 2019.

American Football's sound favors slow, quiet, melodic songwriting over the louder post-hardcore energy common to their peers, drawing comparisons to Nick Drake and Red House Painters as much as to emo contemporaries. Critics have described the interplay of guitar and trumpet as blending the intimacy of emo with the open space of jazz. The house pictured on the debut album's cover, a real property in Urbana, has since become an informal pilgrimage site for fans.
