Sex Pistols
The Sex Pistols are an English punk rock band formed in London in 1975, evolving from an earlier group called the Strand featuring guitarist Steve Jones and drummer Paul Cook. Manager Malcolm McLaren recruited bassist Glen Matlock and, in 1975, singer John Lydon, renamed Johnny Rotten, to complete the classic lineup. Sid Vicious replaced Matlock on bass in early 1977.

The band's only studio album, Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols (1977), reached number one in the UK despite bans by major retailers, and is regarded as a foundational punk rock record. Singles including "Anarchy in the U.K." and "God Save the Queen," released to coincide with Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee, became lightning rods for controversy; "God Save the Queen" was banned by the BBC and independent radio yet reached number two on the UK chart. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006, an honor it publicly refused.
A profanity-filled television interview with Bill Grundy in December 1976 made the band tabloid fixtures overnight. The group churned through record deals with EMI and A&M before settling at Virgin Records, then toured the United States in January 1978 amid Vicious's escalating heroin addiction; the tour ended early and Lydon announced the breakup on January 18, 1978. Vicious died of a heroin overdose in February 1979 while awaiting trial over the death of girlfriend Nancy Spungen.
Surviving members Lydon, Jones, Cook, and Matlock reunited for tours in 1996, 2002-2003, and 2007-2008. In 2024, Cook, Jones, and Matlock toured again with Frank Carter of Frank Carter & the Rattlesnakes on vocals, a lineup Lydon publicly opposed, with dates continuing into 2026.
