Why the United Kingdom?

The United Kingdom is one of the best-connected destinations from Spain, with direct flights to London from Madrid, Barcelona, Málaga, Valencia, Seville and Palma, several of which also fly nonstop to Manchester. The flight takes around two and a half hours, making it a regular choice for weekend trips and short breaks.

London draws most of the Spanish interest —museums, theatre, shopping— but the country offers more: short and long English-language courses, university cities with their own character, and a Premier League that attracts Spanish fans thanks to the number of Spanish players at English clubs. Manchester, Leeds, Glasgow and Newcastle are cheaper, less crowded alternatives to the capital.

One important note post-Brexit: a Spanish national ID card (DNI) is no longer accepted for entry — a valid passport is required. In addition, from 2025 Spanish citizens need to apply for an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) before flying, a separate online process from the passport. The UK does not use the euro either: payments are made in pounds sterling (GBP).

Where to stay

  • London The capital combines free museums, West End theatre and neighbourhoods as different as the City and Camden.
  • Manchester A football city through and through —home to Manchester City and Manchester United— with a music scene and industrial heritage turned into museums and venues.
  • Glasgow Scotland's main gateway, with Victorian architecture, contemporary art and a good base for day trips to the Highlands.
  • Leeds A Yorkshire university city with lively nightlife, good shopping and lower prices than London.
  • Newcastle upon Tyne A northeastern city known for its nightlife, welcoming locals and the nearby Northumberland coast.

The UK is notably more expensive than Spain: a double room in London typically costs 100–180 GBP a night (less in Manchester, Leeds or Newcastle, from around 70 GBP), a simple meal runs 12–18 GBP, and a single tube or bus fare costs 2.80–6.70 GBP depending on zone. Payments are in pounds sterling, not euros, so it's worth checking exchange rates and card fees before travelling.
