Why Greece?

Greece is one of the easiest holiday destinations to reach from Poland - Warsaw, Kraków or Wrocław to Athens takes under three hours, and in season charter and low-cost carriers also open routes to Crete and the Peloponnese.

The country offers more than islands: Athens delivers a dense mix of history and city life, Thessaloniki is a less touristy alternative with excellent food, while Crete and the Peloponnese draw travellers with beaches and a slower pace. The best balance of weather and prices falls in May, June, September and October, before or after the July-August crowds and peak heat.

Greece uses the euro, English is standard in tourist areas, and prices - while rising year on year - still allow for a holiday that won't break the bank, especially outside peak season.

Where to stay

• Athens — Best base for history and city-life lovers, and a launchpad for island hopping.
• Thessaloniki — A less touristy northern city known for standout food and a local, lived-in feel.
• Chania — A Cretan city with a Venetian old town and beaches close by - good for couples and families.
• Kalamata — A quieter Peloponnese base, olive-oil country with fewer crowds than the islands - for those seeking a break from the bustle.

A Greek holiday typically costs similar to or slightly more than one in Poland, and outside peak season it's easy to find good-value accommodation and meals.
