Florence crams the Duomo's terracotta dome, the Uffizi's Renaissance masterpieces, and Michelangelo's David into a compact centre you can walk end to end in half an hour. Ochre rooftops, artisan workshops across the Arno in Oltrarno, and the view from Ponte Vecchio at dusk still deliver the postcard version of Tuscany — but the historic core is small, and in high summer it fills to bursting.

Idéal pourRenaissance art, world-class museums, and easy day trips into the Tuscan countryside
Meilleure périodeApril-May or September-October for mild weather and thinner crowds; book Uffizi and Accademia tickets well ahead year-round regardless of season
Se déplacerThe historic centre is walkable end to end in about 30 minutes and most sights sit within it. Florence Airport (Peretola) connects to Santa Maria Novella by the T2 tram in roughly 20-22 minutes, running every 4-10 minutes; Pisa Airport links in via the Pisa Mover plus a regional train, around 70-90 minutes total. High-speed trains from Santa Maria Novella reach Rome in about 1.5 hours and Bologna in around 40 minutes.
Où logerOltrarno/Santo Spirito - across the river, artisan workshops and a local feel, still a 10-minute walk to the centre; San Lorenzo/Duomo - closest to the major sights, also the busiest and noisiest; Santa Croce - central but calmer than around the Duomo, with good trattorias
À éviter sianyone hoping for an uncrowded city break in July or August, when the centre is jammed and the heat is punishing
