O Menino Jesus dos Atribulados: A Feminine Devotion in Lisbon

This exhibition at the Museu de São Roque explores a unique 19th-century devotion centered on a painting of the Child Jesus known as "dos Atribulados." The story begins in 1817, when an orphan from the Recolhimento da Rua Rosa was cured of paralysis, a miracle witnessed by several people including her doctor. The devotion was predominantly feminine, popular, and confined to the first half of the 19th century, a period of political and social turmoil in Lisbon.

Visitors can see the original painting, which was also reproduced as sculptures for private oratories, including the piece donated to the museum in 2009 that inspired this exhibition. The display includes prayer cards, amulets, and the sculpture itself, offering insight into the religious practices of Lisbon during the reign of King John VI.
