Kiruna Snow Festival: Sculptures and Arctic Winter Fun

When winter light returns to Swedish Lapland, Kiruna fills its city center with a snow festival for all ages. The main draw is the Kiruna International Snow Sculpture Competition, where visiting artists carve elaborate works in front of the city hall; the sculptures stay on display in the Snow Festival Park until spring. Around the square, the program includes a snow playground, dog sledding, figure skating, live music and children's theater.

One highlight is the Kiruna Reindeer Racing Challenge, with local teams racing sleds through heats and finals and the winners donating prize money to youth activities. Nutti Sami Siida brings reindeer visits and Sami culture to the festival venue. The event happens in central Kiruna, around 140 kilometers above the Arctic Circle, where northern lights may glow overhead.
