Birdland Big Band: Friday Night Jazz at Birdland

Every Friday night, the Birdland Big Band brings a 16-piece jazz orchestra to the Birdland Jazz Club in midtown Manhattan. Known for its mix of jazz, funk, Brazilian, Latin, and world music, the band draws sold-out audiences. Weekly guest artists from television bands like David Letterman and Saturday Night Live, as well as pop touring acts, often join.

Founded in 2006 by drummer Tommy Igoe, the band is now led by saxophonist David DeJesus, who since 2017 has emphasized traditional swing and blues. The lineup includes drummer Chris Smith, bassist Doug Weiss, and vocalist Veronica Swift. The early evening sessions also serve as a warm-up for Broadway pit musicians.

The band’s repertoire includes original arrangements and select historical works. Time Out New York called the Birdland Big Band "a completely unique experience."
