Erykah Badu emerged in the late 1990s as one of the artists who defined neo soul, a style blending R&B, 1970s soul and jazz phrasing with hip-hop's rhythmic sensibility. Her 1997 debut, Baduizm, went triple platinum and won her a Grammy Award, alongside a second Grammy for the single 'On & On'.

Later albums, including Mama's Gun and the two-part New Amerykah series, expanded her sound into funk, live instrumentation and sampling. She has continued to record steadily, including a 2015 mixtape that reached the US top twenty, with a new studio album produced by The Alchemist announced in 2025.
