Things to Do in Katowice 2026: OFF Festival & the Spodek

שיתוף

Katowice is the capital of Upper Silesia, Poland's former coal and steel heartland, and one of the country's best examples of post-industrial reinvention — former mines and factories now house museums, concert halls and one of Europe's most respected alternative music festivals.

The UFO-shaped Spodek arena is the city's most recognisable landmark, hosting everything from major concerts to esports, while NOSPR — the modern concert hall of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra — anchors a serious classical-music scene next door. Each August, the OFF Festival brings three days of indie, alternative and experimental acts to the city.

What to see in Katowice — top sights

Spodek — the UFO-shaped 1971 arena and Katowice's most iconic building, still a major concert and events venue.
NOSPR (Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra) — an acclaimed modern concert hall known for its acoustics, right beside the Spodek.
Silesian Museum — built largely underground in a former coal mine, tracing the region's industrial and cultural history.
Nikiszowiec — a UNESCO-nominated early-20th-century miners' housing district of red-brick courtyards, now full of cafés and galleries.
Katowice Market Square (Rynek) — the redeveloped city-centre square, the modern civic heart of the city.

Why visit Katowice

Katowice is Poland's clearest post-industrial success story: a coal-and-steel city that turned its mining heritage — the Silesian Museum, Nikiszowiec — into genuine cultural attractions, while building some of the country's best modern concert venues in the Spodek and NOSPR. It is also internationally known in gaming circles as the long-running home of the IEM Katowice esports tournament.

The OFF Festival each August has built a reputation well beyond Poland for its alternative and left-field line-ups, and the compact centre makes it easy to combine a festival trip with the museum and Nikiszowiec in the same weekend.
