Kelela Mizanekristos, the American singer known as Kelela, brings her electronic sound to Seattle. Born in Washington, D.C., and raised in Gaithersburg, Maryland, she first made an impact with the mixtape Cut 4 Me, which was heavily influenced by grime. The mixtape helped revive the rhythm & grime subgenre, and her subsequent work has continued to explore electronic music.
Her path has included singing jazz standards at cafés, joining an indie band, and singing progressive metal. She has contributed vocals to tracks by Danny Brown, Gorillaz, and Clams Casino, and her releases include the EP Hallucinogen and the albums Take Me Apart, Raven, and New Avatar.
