Charles Mingus Orchestra at Birdland Theater

After a hiatus, the Charles Mingus Orchestra returns to the stage at Birdland Theater. Originally assembled in 1999 by Sue Mingus, this 10-piece ensemble delivers the intensity of the Mingus Big Band while exploring a broader repertoire. Its distinctive sound comes from an expanded instrumentation that includes bassoon, bass clarinet, French horn, and guitar—instruments rarely heard in jazz. The rest of the band features drums, bass, trombone, trumpet, and saxophones, many of whom also perform with the Mingus Big Band.

The orchestra has a rich history in New York, including a 14-year residency at Fez Under Time Cafe and performances at Joe’s Pub. For nearly 12 years, it was part of the celebrated Mingus Mondays at Jazz Standard, a local institution that rotated the Orchestra, the Dynasty, and the Big Band. This return marks a triumphant live comeback for the ensemble.
