Giora Feidman is an Argentine-born Israeli clarinetist who specializes in klezmer music. He was born on 25 March 1936 in Buenos Aires, to Bessarabian Jewish parents who had emigrated from Chisinau to Argentina in 1905. His father, grandfather and great-grandfather were klezmer musicians who played at weddings, bar mitzvahs and holiday celebrations in Eastern European shtetls.
At the age of 18 he joined the Teatro Colon Symphony Orchestra in Buenos Aires. Two years later he moved to Israel and became the youngest clarinetist to play with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, where he remained for many years. He began a solo career in the early 1970s, and in 1974 the Israel Philharmonic commissioned Misha Segal to write a one-movement clarinet concerto for him.
Feidman played the clarinet solos on the soundtrack of the film Schindler's List (1993) at the invitation of Steven Spielberg, and appeared as himself in the film Beyond Silence (1996). He has worked with ensembles including the Kronos Quartet, the Berliner Symphoniker and the Rastrelli Cello Quartet, and has released more than 60 recordings. He also founded the annual seminar and master class program Clarinet and Klezmer in the Galilee, held in Safed, Israel.
