Why Spain?

Spain remains the UK's most-visited holiday country, and the route network reflects it: direct flights run year-round from Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham, Stansted and Edinburgh to both the mainland and the islands, so there's rarely a need to connect.

Budget carriers including easyJet, Ryanair, Jet2 and TUI compete hard on the main corridors, which keeps fares to Barcelona, Malaga, Alicante and Palma among the cheapest short-haul options from the UK, especially outside July and August. Package deals bundling flights, transfers and hotels are widely available for the Costas and the Balearics.

The appeal isn't just price. Spain covers a wide range of trip types from one country: Mediterranean beach resorts along the Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca, city breaks in Barcelona and Madrid, and quieter Andalusian heritage towns, all within a flight time of under three hours.

Where to stay

  • Barcelona Suits travellers who want beach and city in one trip, with direct flights from all six UK departure airports.
  • Malaga The main gateway to the Costa del Sol, best for resort stays in Marbella, Nerja or Fuengirola with a walkable old town on arrival.
  • Madrid An inland capital for museum and culture-led breaks, better suited to spring or autumn than a beach-focused trip.
  • Seville Andalusian architecture and tapas culture, best visited outside summer when temperatures regularly pass 35°C.
  • Zaragoza A quieter, lower-cost alternative with fast rail links to Madrid and Barcelona, appealing to repeat visitors past the main sights.

A typical UK-to-Spain city break runs from around £60 for a main-meal-and-drink in a mid-range restaurant, with three-star hotel doubles from roughly £70–£110 a night depending on season and city; the Costas and inland cities away from Barcelona and Palma tend to run cheaper than the coastal hotspots in August. Since Brexit, UK travellers need a passport valid for at least three months beyond the departure date and issued within the last ten years, and are limited to 90 days in every 180 within the Schengen area, so longer or repeat stays need to be planned around that allowance.
