Why Greece?
Greece is easy to reach from Germany: Athens is roughly two and a half to three flight hours from Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Hamburg and Cologne, with several daily direct connections year-round. In the summer half of the year, additional charter and scheduled flights serve island destinations such as Crete, Rhodes or Kos, making even more remote regions reachable without a stopover.
The country combines ancient sites such as the Acropolis, the Oracle of Delphi and the excavations at Olympia with more than 200 inhabited islands, ranging from busy resort towns to quiet fishing villages. This mix of cultural history and coastline can be combined within a single trip, for example a few days in Athens followed by an island stay.
Accommodation and dining in Greece are generally below Western European price levels, although popular islands such as Mykonos or Santorini become significantly more expensive in peak season. The travel season runs from April to October; May, June, September and October offer milder temperatures and lower prices than the peak months of July and August, when heat and visitor numbers are highest.
Where to stay
- Athens — Athens combines the Acropolis and ancient sites with a lively café and nightlife scene, and is reachable year-round via direct flights from all six German airports.
- Thessaloniki — Thessaloniki offers Byzantine churches, a long waterfront promenade and far fewer tourists than Athens, with solid direct connections from Germany.
- Chania — Chania on Crete's northwest coast is known for its Venetian harbour and serves as the gateway to western Crete's beaches and gorges, with direct flights from several German airports mainly in summer.
- Kalamata — Kalamata in the southern Peloponnese is the gateway to the Mani peninsula and Messenia's olive groves, with seasonal direct flights from Germany.
Mid-range accommodation and dining typically run €60–100 per person per day outside the main tourist islands, with Mykonos, Santorini and central Athens costing noticeably more in peak season.
