Why Croatia?
Croatia has become a credible alternative to the French Riviera or Italy for French travellers seeking an unspoilt coastline: over a thousand islands scattered along the Adriatic, turquoise water and a light reminiscent of Greece without the crowds.
From Paris, Nice, Lyon or Marseille, direct links to Split, Dubrovnik, Zagreb and Zadar have multiplied in recent years, driven by low-cost carriers and Croatia Airlines, bringing the flight down to just over two hours.
The country also stands out for its value for money: dining, accommodation and boat charters remain noticeably cheaper than on the French Riviera, while offering a dense layer of Roman and Venetian heritage, from Split to Dubrovnik and across the Dalmatian archipelagos.
Where to stay
- Split — Built around Diocletian's Palace, Split is the departure point for ferries to Hvar, Brač and Vis, and the most practical gateway to central Dalmatia.
- Dubrovnik — Enclosed within its 16th-century walls, Dubrovnik remains the country's most photographed city, but also the most expensive and the most crowded in July and August.
- Zadar — Quieter than Split or Dubrovnik, Zadar combines Roman ruins, its sea organ, and direct access to the Kornati and Krka national parks.
- Zagreb — The inland capital offers a cultural city break distinct from the coast, with its markets, museums and fast-growing dining scene.
- Rijeka — A reconverted industrial port, Rijeka gives access to the Opatija riviera and the Kvarner islands, a less touristy option than Dalmatia.
Budget roughly €25-35 per person per day for everyday dining, €60-120 a night for mid-range hotels outside Dubrovnik (often 30-50% pricier), and a separate allowance for ferries or boat rental if you're island-hopping in summer.
