Why Croatia?
Croatia is one of the easiest Adriatic destinations for Polish travellers to reach without a multi-hour drive. Direct flights connect Warsaw, Krakow, Katowice, Gdansk, Wroclaw and Poznan with Split, Dubrovnik, Zadar and Zagreb, and the flight itself usually takes around two hours – shorter than a return train trip between Warsaw and Krakow.
What sets the Croatian coast apart from other Mediterranean destinations is its chain of more than a thousand islands strung along the shoreline – travellers can split their time between exploring old towns and ferry-hopping to Hvar, Brac or Korcula without straying far from base. The water is exceptionally clear, and prices in most towns remain lower than in Italy or France, though they climb in July and August alongside the crowds.
For those who prefer driving, Croatia sits within a day's reach through Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia, making it a popular choice both for a short weekend flight and a longer family holiday with a car.
Where to stay
- Split — The most convenient base for island-hopping – suits travellers who want to combine city life with ferry trips to Hvar or Brac.
- Dubrownik — A history-steeped old town within ancient walls – for travellers after a compact, picturesque setting who aren't put off by higher prices.
- Zadar — A calmer alternative to Split with its sea organ and famous sunsets – for those who prefer fewer crowds and lower prices.
- Zagrzeb — A capital with a Central European feel, good for a short city break or as a land entry point before heading on to the coast.
- Rijeka — A less touristy port on the Kvarner Gulf – for travellers after an authentic feel and easy access to Krk island without the crowds of the southern coast.
On the coast, a restaurant main course typically costs around 12–20 EUR, and mid-season accommodation starts from 60–80 EUR per room; in July and August, prices in popular towns can rise by as much as half.
