Why Italy?

From Warsaw, Krakow, Katowice, Gdansk, Wroclaw and Poznan, direct flights to Italy take 2-2.5 hours, mostly on Ryanair and Wizz Air to Rome, Milan, Bologna or Pisa. That's shorter than flying to the Canary Islands or Egypt, and the route network stays dense year-round, not just in high season.

Italy combines things rarely found in one country: historic cities (Rome, Florence, Bologna), coastline (Liguria, Tuscany, Puglia) and mountains (the Alps, the Dolomites) within a few hours' drive of each other. Regional cuisine differs enough that a trip to Rome and a trip to Bologna are, in practice, two different culinary countries.

The cost of a stay is higher than in Poland but lower than in France or Scandinavia — a trattoria meal typically runs 15-25 EUR per course, and a double room in a mid-sized city costs 60-120 EUR a night. Outside August and the Christmas period, flight and hotel prices drop noticeably.

Where to stay

  • Rome The capital with ancient ruins, the Vatican and countless trattorias — realistically needs 3-4 days to cover the essentials.
  • Milan A fashion and business hub, and a convenient base for day trips to the lakes (Como, Garda) and the Alps.
  • Florence The cradle of the Renaissance, with the Uffizi Gallery and the Duomo — a compact old town explored mostly on foot.
  • Turin A less touristy city with hearty Piedmontese cuisine, Savoy-era palaces and quick access to the mountains.
  • Bologna Italy's culinary capital (ragù, tortellini, mortadella) and a rail hub within easy reach of Florence and Venice.

A week in Italy (low-cost flights + a 3-star hotel + trattoria meals) runs roughly 2500-4000 PLN per person outside peak season, 3500-5500 PLN in July-August. Flights booked 2-3 months ahead cost 150-400 PLN one way.
