Alice Geirinhas presents *Sycorax*, a drawing installation at the Museu Nacional de Arte Contemporânea do Chiado in Lisbon. The exhibition takes its name from the witch and mother of Caliban in Shakespeare's *The Tempest* — a character who remains absent and silenced in the original play, existing only through the accounts of others.
Using the visual language of medieval engravings and woodcuts, Geirinhas revisits imagery tied to the persecution of women and witch hunts in Europe. Her works feature bodies in tension, stark contrasts, and symbols charged with moral weight, questioning historical mechanisms of control, exclusion, and representation of the feminine. Curated by Lúcia Saldanha and Rui Afonso Santos, the show invites reflection on the voices history chose to erase — and the possibility of bringing them back.
