Caravana: A Poetic Journey at Teatro Aberto

Caravana marks the theatrical debut of acclaimed Portuguese poet João Luís Barreto Guimarães, who won the 2025 Prémio de Teatro Carlos Avilez – SPA/Teatro Aberto with this play. The production, directed by João Pedro Vaz, unfolds in four acts poetically named after the phases of the moon.

At the heart of the story is a solitary man, simply called Ele (Joaquim Horta), living in a caravan parked on a vacant lot. He receives fleeting nocturnal visits from three women—Ela, a Rapariga, and a Mulher, all played by Rita Calçada Bastos—engaging in games of seduction where characters both reveal and conceal themselves. The jury praised the play for its "plot with moments of approach and distance, doubt and uncertainty" that keeps the audience captivated.

Presented by Novo Grupo/Teatro Aberto and Teatro Nacional São João, this intimate drama invites spectators to uncover what lies behind the characters' masks. It's a compelling evening of theatre for those who appreciate poetic storytelling and nuanced performances.
