My Own Private Idaho in 35mm

This 35mm screening brings Gus Van Sant's My Own Private Idaho to The Castro Theatre. A loose adaptation of Shakespeare's Henry IV, the film follows Mike Waters, a gay hustler afflicted with narcolepsy, and Scott Favor, the rebellious son of a mayor, as they travel from Portland, Oregon, to Idaho and finally to the coast of Italy searching for Mike's estranged mother. Along the way they pass through a world of junkies, thieves and johns, a story of longing for queer love in a hopeless place.

On the big screen in 35mm, the film's imagery and dialogue take on full weight, anchored by understated performances from River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves, with Udo Kier also in the cast. It is a work of 90s queer cinema.
