Götz Alsmann is a German musician, singer and television presenter, born on 12 July 1957 in Münster. He began piano lessons at the age of eight, joined the Heupferd Jug Band in 1973, and later studied German studies, journalism and musicology at the University of Münster. He earned a doctorate in 1985 with a dissertation on independent US record labels and American popular music from 1943 to 1963, and became an honorary professor there in 2011.
He founded Götz Alsmann & The Sentimental Pounders in 1980, and the Götz-Alsmann-Band has existed since 1989. Since 2007 the band's albums have appeared on Blue Note Records. His recordings include In Paris (2011), Am Broadway (2014) and In Rom (2017), which together form a trilogy named after the cities where they were recorded.
Alsmann has worked as a radio host since 1985 and presented the WDR talk show Zimmer frei! with Christine Westermann from 1996 to 2016, for which the pair received the Adolf Grimme Prize in 2000. His other awards include ECHO Jazz prizes in 2004 and 2012, the Goldene Stimmgabel in 2006, the Order of Merit of North Rhine-Westphalia in 2019 and the Federal Cross of Merit in 2024.
