The franchise was established in 1959 and began play in 1960 as a charter member of the American Football League, joining the NFL in 1970 through the AFL–NFL merger.
The team has played in a succession of homes over its history: the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in 1960, Balboa Stadium in San Diego from 1961 to 1966, San Diego Stadium from 1967 to 2016, Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson from 2017 to 2019, and SoFi Stadium in Inglewood since 2020.
