O Tim Peake
In May 2009 Peake was selected by the European Space Agency from more than 8,000 applicants as one of six new astronaut candidates, completing basic training in November 2010. On 15 December 2015 he launched aboard Soyuz TMA-19M to become the first British ESA astronaut in space, serving as a flight engineer on the International Space Station for the Principia mission. On 15 January 2016 he carried out the first spacewalk by a British astronaut, spending nearly five hours outside the station to replace a faulty power unit.
During roughly six months in orbit, Peake also ran the London Marathon on the station's treadmill, becoming the first person to complete the race from space, and took part in outreach activities that engaged more than two million students. He returned to Earth on 18 June 2016 after 185 days in orbit and was appointed Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George later that year for services to space research and scientific education.
Since retiring from active ESA service in 2023, Peake has continued as an author and broadcaster, publishing books including Ask an Astronaut, Limitless: The Autobiography and Space: The Human Story, and co-presenting a BBC podcast on space exploration. He serves as an ambassador for the Prince's Trust, the Scout Association and STEM Learning.
