Best time to visit the United Kingdom: month by month

There is no single best month to visit the United Kingdom, because the two things most people are choosing between — decent weather and a full events calendar — peak at opposite ends of the year. Summer buys long daylight and outdoor festivals at the cost of crowds and the highest prices of the year. Autumn and early winter buy the densest indoor calendar of gigs, theatre and comedy at the cost of short days and rain.

Quick answer

The weather is the part visitors most often get wrong. It is mild rather than warm year-round, changeable everywhere, and wetter in the west than the east — Glasgow and Manchester get considerably more rain than Cambridge or Norwich. What it very rarely is, is extreme, so nothing on this page needs to be planned around the forecast except an outdoor festival.

The table below sets out what each month actually looks like. The listings underneath show what is on right now across the country.

Picking a month for the trip you actually want

For events, the honest answer is autumn. September through November is when the indoor calendar is at its fullest — the touring circuit, the theatre season and the classical programmes all run at once, hotel prices have come off their summer peak, and the cities are quieter. October is the densest single month in our listings, and that is not an artefact: it is when the British live calendar is genuinely at capacity.

For weather and daylight, late May to early July. Days are long, the driest stretch of the year usually falls in spring, and prices have not yet hit the school-holiday peak that starts in late July. June in particular gives you the longest evenings of the year — and much longer ones in Scotland, where it barely gets properly dark.

For value, January and February. They are cold and dark, and everything indoors is cheap, quiet and open. If a trip is built around museums, galleries and gigs rather than scenery, the winter version costs a fraction of the summer one.

A note on how far ahead to look: the further into the future you search, the emptier any UK events calendar appears — including this one. That is on-sale timing, not a real gap. Most tours, theatre runs and festivals go on sale a few months out, so a month that looks bare six months ahead will fill in well before you get there.

Practical planning

  • School holidays drive prices more than the weather does — late July to early September, plus a week at half-term in February and October, and Easter.
  • Most bank holidays fall on Mondays and turn a weekend into a three-day one, pushing up city hotel prices and emptying the business districts. Scotland's calendar differs from the rest of the UK: 2 January and St Andrew's Day are bank holidays there, and the summer bank holiday falls at the start of August rather than the end.
  • Rail is the default way between cities. Advance tickets released a few weeks or months ahead cost a fraction of the walk-up fare, but are tied to a specific train.
  • Scotland's daylight swings much harder than England's — very long midsummer evenings, very short winter afternoons. Plan Highland driving around that, not around temperature.
  • Pack for changeable rather than cold: layers and a waterproof cover almost the entire year outside high summer.
  • Sunday is quieter everywhere than most visitors expect — shorter shop hours, reduced rail services, and some cathedrals and churches closed to sightseers.

FAQ

What is the best month to visit the UK?
For weather and daylight, late May to early July. For events, September to November — the indoor touring, theatre and classical seasons all run at once and October is the fullest month of the year. For value, January and February, when everything indoors is cheap and quiet.
What is the cheapest time to visit the UK?
January and February, outside the February half-term week. Flights and accommodation are at their lowest, and museums, galleries and venues are all open and uncrowded. Late autumn is the next cheapest, and comes with a much fuller events calendar.
When is the busiest time to visit the UK?
Late July and August, when school holidays overlap with the warmest weather and the outdoor festival season. Edinburgh in August is the single most booked-out place and time in the country — reserve accommodation there months ahead or base yourself elsewhere in Scotland.
Does it rain all the time in the UK?
No, but it is changeable and rain is possible in any month. The west is considerably wetter than the east, and autumn and winter are wetter than spring. Spring is usually the driest stretch of the year. Nothing except an outdoor festival needs planning around the forecast.
Why does the events calendar look empty several months out?
Because tickets have not gone on sale yet. Tours, theatre runs and festivals are typically announced and released a few months ahead, so any calendar — this one included — thins out the further ahead you look. It fills in as on-sale dates arrive.
