Why Italy?

From Germany's major airports, Italy is one to two hours away by air – Munich to Milan takes just over an hour, Frankfurt to Rome around two. Drivers can reach South Tyrol or Lake Garda via the Brenner motorway in six to eight hours, no airport required.

The country packs into a short distance what would otherwise take several destinations: cities with art and architecture, coastline on two seas, mountains in the north, and cuisine that changes noticeably from region to region. Rome, Milan, Florence, Bologna and Turin are all under three flight hours from Germany.

Italy isn't unfamiliar territory for Germans: it's been one of the most-visited destinations abroad for decades, travel infrastructure is built accordingly, and German is spoken in South Tyrol regardless. That lowers the barrier compared with farther-flung or linguistically harder destinations.

• Rome — The capital packs ancient ruins, the Vatican and one of Europe's densest museum landscapes into a compact center.
• Milan — Italy's business and fashion hub, with Lake Como and Lake Garda both within day-trip distance.
• Florence — A compact Renaissance city that puts Tuscany's Chianti region and Siena within an hour's reach.
• Bologna — A university city known for its arcaded streets and a reputation as Italy's most serious food destination.
• Turin — An elegant, less crowded alternative at the foot of the Alps, known for its automotive history, Egyptian Museum and chocolate-making tradition.

Mid-range hotel: €90–150/night in Rome or Milan, €60–100 in Bologna or Turin. Restaurant dinner: €25–40 per person. High-speed train Milan–Rome: from around €30, cheaper with advance booking.
